30 Years of Tamarack Physical Therapy: Our Story in Fort McMurray

Thirty years is a long time for any business to stay in one place, especially in a city like Fort McMurray that’s seen its share of boom years, downturns, and everything in between. Tamarack Physical Therapy has been on Franklin Avenue in downtown Fort McMurray since 1996, which makes it one of the longer-standing physiotherapy clinics in the city.

What’s stayed the same

A lot has changed in the physiotherapy field over three decades, from treatment techniques to equipment to how patients book appointments. What hasn’t changed is the basic approach: understand what’s actually going on with a patient before building a plan, rather than handing out a generic exercise sheet and hoping for the best.

The clinic today

Tamarack Physical Therapy is currently owned and run by Satyendra Singh Rathore & Tanu Khairwa, a registered physiotherapist with over 9 years of clinical experience, including time running a private clinic and working in a hospital setting before coming to Fort McMurray. The clinic treats musculoskeletal conditions, neurological disorders, and post-operative rehabilitation, built around manual therapy, tailored exercise programs, and patient education.

Serving the city and the oil sands

Fort McMurray’s economy has always been tied closely to the oil sands, and the clinic’s patient base reflects that. Over the years, Tamarack has treated office workers, tradespeople, and people connected to the oil sands industry, alongside the usual mix of sports injuries and everyday aches that show up in any community. Being downtown, in Tamarack Village, has kept the clinic accessible to people across the city, not just those in the immediate neighborhood.

Why longevity matters when choosing a clinic

A clinic that’s been in the same place for decades usually means something: a steady base of returning patients, a track record the community can ask about directly, and familiarity with the specific physical demands of working and living in Fort McMurray. None of that replaces checking credentials or asking the right questions before booking, but it’s a reasonable starting point.

Looking ahead

Tamarack Physical Therapy continues to serve downtown Fort McMurray and the surrounding communities, including Thickwood, Timberlea, Abasand, Beacon Hill, Gregoire, Wood Buffalo, and Anzac, with direct billing and same-day appointments often available.
